An old man tells how he was introduced to sex and death on the same day, when he was almost 13: He was staying at his cousin's ranch and was friendly with Rufino, one of the cowhands. Rufino takes him to a brothel in town. One of the women there, called La Cautiva-the Captive- relates the story of an Indian raid on her home. While she is telling the story, a band of toughs led by the outlaw Moreira storm into the brothel. The narrator hides in a dark room upstairs. La Cautiva comes in and makes love to him. When he leaves early in the morning, he witnesses the stabbing of Moreira by a police sargeant.
